چکیده
Does Public Information about School Quality Lead to Flight from Low-Achieving Schools? We estimate the effect of publicly disseminated information about school-level achievement on students’ mobility between elementary schools. We find that students are more likely to leave their school when poor school-level performance is revealed. In general, parents respond to information soon after it becomes available. Once the information is absorbed, they do not respond to subsequent releases, even when it is reframed and given widespread media attention. Parents in low-income neighborhoods and those who speak a non-English language at home respond most strongly. However, non-English speaking parents only respond when information is widely disseminated and discussed in the media. JEL Classification: I21

Does Attending a Low-Achieving School Affect High-Performing Student Outcomes?
This paper follows a cohort of initially high-performing Missouri students from grade-3 through grade-9 and examines whether attending a low-achieving school impacts their subsequent standardized exam scores, as well as the grade in which they first take Algebra I. Two key findings emerge. First, attending a low-achieving school does not affect the standardized exam performance of initially hig...
متن کاملDoes immigration induce ‘ native flight ’ from public schools into private schools ?
The paper tests whether native-born American families respond to inflows of immigrants by sending their children to private school. The analysis uses 1980 and 1990 Census data from 132 metropolitan areas. For primary school students, no significant relation between immigration and private school enrolment is found. For secondary schools, a significant link emerges. For every four immigrants who...

economists generally theorise that the proliferation of information will lead to improvements in the quality of public services, but the empirical evidence is less conclusive (for example, Jacob and levitt, 2003). prior analyses have usually focussed on markets with restricted pricing. When prices can move and quality is unobserved, the theoretical literature (Wollinsky 1993) states that prices...
متن کاملRacial Segregation and the Private/Public School Choice
Using data from the National Educational Longitudinal Study (NELS), I examine ethnic and racial patterns of private school attendance. I find that a high level of racial sorting occurs between the private and public school systems. At both the 8th and 10th grade levels, blacks and Hispanics are substantially less likely to attend private schools than are whites. I also find evidence that racial...
متن کاملDoes Public School Competition Affect Teacher Quality?
Under most conceivable scenarios of expanded choice, even with private school vouchers, the public school system will still remain the majority supplier of schooling. Therefore, it is important to know what might happen to quality and outcomes in the remaining public schools. This paper examines the effect of public school competition on academic achievement. The empirical analysis has two majo...
